Ronald Reagan

40th president of the United States of America from 1981 to 1989.
He was born on February 6th, 1911 in Tampica (Illonois, USA). Reagan
studied sociology and from 1932 until 1937 he worked as radio announcer,
especially for sports events. After that he was a showmaster and an actor.
He played in more than 50 movies. In 1941 he joined the actor´s trade
union and between 1947 and 1952 he was president of the union.
In 1962 he joined the Republican Party and became very conservative.
From 1967 to 1975 he was Governor of California
1976 he tried to become candidate for the presidency of the USA without
success.
In 1980 he was elected president
In 1981 he was shot by a would-be assassin but he recovered quickly.
He reduced taxes heavily, decreased spending on social-programs,
and increased defense spending. With these actions he helped to give America
a new self-confidence. The self-confidence had been reduced by the Vietnam-War
and the Watergate-affair.
Reagan was reelected in 1984 and supported anti-communist movements
in Central America, Asia and Africa. In meetings with the Russian leader
Mikhail Gorbachev he reached a treaty that would eliminate intermediate-range
nuclear missiles.
Reagan also declared war against international terrorism, sending American
bombers against Libya, because of allegations that Libya was involved in
an attack on American soldiers in a West Berlin nightclub.
1989 his second presidency ended.
