Ho Chi Minh Ho Chi Minh was born on May 19, 1890 in the villiage of Kimlien, Vietnam. His real name was Nguyen Tat Thanh. After World War I Ho began his political career using the pseudonym Nguyen Ai Quoc (Nguyen the Patriot). In late 1924 he was sent to China by the French Communist Party to organize a revolutionary movement among Vietnamese exiles. He was forced to leave China, but he returned in 1930 and founded the Indochinese Communist Party (ICP). After fifteen year long conflicts with the British police and a 5 year long exil, the Vietminh proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) in Hanoi with Ho Chi Minh as president in 1945 . The French didn´t accept the independence of Vietnam and in late 1946 war broke out. Ho won the war 1954 and Vietnam became devided in North and South Vietnam. In the early 1960s guerrillias mounted an insurgency against the U.S.-supported regime in Saigon. The Communist won over the South in 1975.

Ho Chi Minh died of heart failure in Hanoi on September 3, 1969. He is known as one of the most popular Communist leaders of the World. In his honor Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in 1975.
