In 1978 Noor Taraki tried to create a Marxist state in Afghanistan
with Soviet aid. The Soviet invasion was met with fierce resistance from
conservative Muslim opposition and from the Afghan population. The result
was a bloody war. In 1989 the Soviets had to withdraw their troups from
Afghanistan.
