The Profumo Affair was one of the greatest sex scandals in British political history; it led to the
resignation of War Minister John Profumo on March 22, 1963.
Journalists discovered that Profumo had an affair with Christine Keeler, a 23-year-old woman, who also
had a relation with Soviet attaché Captain Eugene Ivanov. This might have been a danger for British war
politics, because important information might have been given to the enemy (it was the time of the Cold
War). Furthermore this affair led to a great scandal in the popular press.
As a result of that Profumo eventually admitted that Keeler was his ex-lover and resigned.
