On April 17th 1961 1200 exile Cubans tried to invade Cuba on the SW coast at the Bay of Pigs (Bahia de
los Cochinos) in order to overthrow the Marxist regime under Fidel Castro.
The invaders were supported by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
But since the governing president Kennedy didn’t want to show the Americans taking part in the
invasion because he didn’t want the Cold War to escalate, he ordered the retreat of US troops before the
invasion was completed.
Without the American help the invaders had no chance and were really defeated by Cuban forces.
