U-2

The U-2 , is an American spy plane. One of the planes was shot down
over Russia on May 1, 1960. It was piloted by Francis Gary Powers, who
survived the accident, but he was arrested by the Russians. The plane took
photos of troop movements and missile sites. At first President Eisenhower
denied that the U-2 was spying, but the Soviets had evidence and Eisenhower
had to admit it. Khrushchev demanded an apology for the flights and the
promise to halt them. Eisenhower agreed to stop the U-2 flights, but he
would not apologize. As a consequence Khrushchev called off a planned summit
conference. The conflict between the USA and the Soviets seemed as dangerous
as ever.
