In the 1950s the drug/medicine Thalidomide was introduced on the market. Thalidomide alleviates nausea and insomnia in pregnant women. When it is taken in the first three months of pregnancy, it prevents the normal development and proper growth of the foetus, but this was not known at that time. The result were horrific birth defects. Children who were born with these defects during the late 1950s and early 1960s were called Children of Thalidomide.
