Charles de Gaulle (1890-1970), soldier in the First World War and French general in the Second World War, became provisional premier president in 1945. He returned to power in 1958 as the architect of the Fifth French Republic and as its first President (1959-69). During his presidency he led France into the European Economic Community and strengthened ties with the Soviet Union and China.
