Trouble in the Suez

The Suez Channel was one of the most important waterways of the world. This way oil was transported to Europe by ship. In 1956 Britain and the USA withdrew their financial support for an important dam project in Egypt. In order to help finance the project, General Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal and expelled oil and embassy officials. The consequence was an invasion of Egypt by British, French and Israeli forces. Under pressure from the United States the invaders left Egypt and a UN emergency force was sent to Egypt.
