He was a Soviet politician, First Secretary of the Soviet Communist
Party and prime minister. As a close associate of Stalin, he emerged victorious
from the power struggle that followed Stalin`s death. In 1956 he began
a program of destalinization and of liberalization that led to the break
with the Communist government of China. His ecomomic and foreign policies
failed. Because of that he was ousted by Brezhnev and Kossygin.
