In Montgomery, Alabama a black woman Mrs Rosa Parks boarded a bus in 1955 and took a seat near the front. When a white man entered the full bus and found no seat the bus driver asked the woman to stand up because Negroes had to give up their seats. Because she refused to follow this order she was arrested. The consequence was a bus boycott of the blacks which was planned and organized by Martin Luther King. The bus company lost 65 per cent of its business and had to cut schedules and raise fares. Montgomery had become a scene of a non-violent battle for human and equal rights. In November,1956, the Supreme Court abolished segregation on buses.
