Harry S. Truman

US statesman; Democratic president ( 1945-1953). He became
president on the death in office of F.D.Roosevelt and one of his earliest
acts was to order the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end the
war with Japan. In the Truman Doctrine he announced economic and military
aid to countries threatened by interference from other (communist) states.
His administration introduced the Marshall Plan of postwar economic aid
to Europe and saw the establishment of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization
in 1949 (NATO). In domestic politics his Fair Deal programme promised social
reform and he also started integrating Afro-American in the US-armed forces.
